More Than a Guide

Steve isn’t just someone who knows where to find wildlife—he understands why they’re there. His expertise comes from decades of patient observation, countless hours in the field, and an insatiable curiosity about animal behavior.

For over 20 years, Steve has been deeply connected to the wildlife and landscapes of Western North Carolina. His most formative work was spending a full year documenting black bears for the Urban Bear Study in Asheville, following biologists, capturing behaviors few ever witness, and telling stories through his lens that changed how people see these incredible animals.

That work was published in a book and displayed in iconic local spaces—but more importantly, it taught Steve the patience, respect, and field craft that define his approach today.

A Naturalist at Heart

What sets Steve apart isn’t just his photography—it’s his understanding of the wild. He reads animal behavior like others read books. He knows the subtle signs that an elk is about to move, the sounds that mean owls are near, and the seasonal rhythms that dictate where bears feed.

This knowledge transforms every tour from a photo outing into an immersive wildlife experience. You’re not just taking pictures—you’re learning to see the forest the way Steve does, understanding the stories unfolding around you.

Steve brings this same depth of knowledge to waterfalls and scenic landscapes across the Blue Ridge Parkway, Pisgah National Forest, and the Great Smoky Mountains. Every location has its own character, best light, and hidden angles that only someone who’s photographed them hundreds of times can reveal.

I was happiest capturing interesting and happy people at the zenith of their joy. That’s what drew me to this work—being present for those perfect moments in nature.

The Philosophy

Steve’s approach is simple: small groups, ethical practices, and genuine connection to place. He believes the best wildlife photography comes from patience, respect, and understanding—never disrupting animals for a shot, always prioritizing their wellbeing.

Every tour is crafted around the best conditions: ideal lighting, peak seasons for specific species, and Steve’s intimate knowledge of where to be and when. You’re not just following someone with a camera—you’re learning from a naturalist who’s spent two decades mastering these mountains.

Your Experience

Whether you’re an experienced photographer looking to improve your wildlife technique or someone who simply wants to experience nature with an expert guide, Steve creates tours that match your goals.

Optional advanced coaching is available for those who want to dive deeper into field craft, animal behavior, composition, and ethical wildlife photography practices. But at its core, every tour is about being present in remarkable places with someone who knows them intimately.

From Cades Cove elk at sunrise to hidden waterfall gems in Pisgah, Steve’s tours aren’t just about the destinations—they’re about seeing the Blue Ridge through the eyes of someone who truly knows it.
